The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” offers a comfortable and classic approach to Kilimanjaro’s summit. This route is the only one featuring mountain huts instead of tents, giving climbers warm shelter each night and a gentle introduction to high-altitude trekking.
Your journey begins in lush, green rainforest where colobus monkeys leap between trees, then rises through heather, moorland, and quiet alpine desert. The trail is steady and well-defined, making it ideal for those who prefer a simpler, more direct path toward the roof of Africa.
As you approach Kibo Hut, the air becomes crisp, the stars grow sharper, and your anticipation deepens. The midnight summit push is challenging yet deeply rewarding — a slow, steady climb into the dawn. Reaching Uhuru Peak from Marangu is a moment of pure clarity and joy, made even sweeter by the warm welcome awaiting you back at Horombo Hut.
Tour Plan
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) – Mandara Hut (2,720 m)
Start at the Marangu Gate with registration and meet your climbing crew. The trail winds through lush rainforest, with the chance to see blue monkeys and colorful bird species. Arrive at Mandara Hut, then optionally walk to Maundi Crater for views of Kenya’s interior.
Hiking: 4–5 hours
Accommodation: Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Rise early for a scenic climb into the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically as giant heathers and volcanic rock formations appear. The trail offers clear views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Hiking: 6–7 hours

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
The trail continues through alpine desert with striking views. This is a long but gentle ascent with minimal vegetation. Arrive at Kibo Hut, located directly below the Kibo Crater Wall. After an early dinner, rest before the midnight summit push.
Hiking: 5–6 hours

Day 4: Summit Day – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Begin the summit climb around midnight. The steep ascent to Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) is challenging but rewarding as the horizon glows with sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
After photos and celebrations, descend to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, then continue to Horombo Hut for the night.
