Known as the “Whiskey Route,” the Machame trail is bold, dramatic, and incredibly scenic, perfect for trekkers who want adventure wrapped in beauty. From the lush rainforests at the base of Kilimanjaro to the sweeping views from Shira Plateau, every stage of this climb feels like a new chapter in a mountain story.

As you move higher, landscapes shift around you: moorlands glowing with giant lobelias, rugged volcanic cliffs, the towering Barranco Wall, and the desert-like quiet of high camp. The Machame Route balances challenge and reward, offering excellent acclimatization and a thrilling variety of terrain.

With determination, teamwork, and steady guidance, the final ascent from Barafu to Uhuru Peak becomes a triumph of spirit — a moment where the world stretches out beneath you, and you realize just how far your courage has carried you.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800 m) – Machame Camp (3,000 m)

After registration at the Machame Gate, trek through dense rainforest filled with streams, mossy pathways, and towering trees. The air is humid and the ascent steady. As you gain altitude, the forest begins to thin.

Hiking: 5–7 hours

Accommodation: Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840 m)

The trail steepens as you climb out of the forest into heather and moorland. This day offers sweeping views of Kibo Peak and the Shira Plateau. You will cross volcanic ridges and open landscapes before reaching Shira Camp.

Hiking: 4–6 hours

Accommodation: Shira Camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,600 m) – Barranco Camp (3,900 m)

A crucial acclimatization day. Gradually ascend to Lava Tower, where you’ll stop for a hot lunch. Afterwards, descend into the Barranco Valley — a beautiful and sheltered location surrounded by steep cliffs and hanging glaciers.

Hiking: 6–7 hours

Accommodation: Barranco Camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,050 m)

Begin with the climb up Barranco Wall — an exciting scramble with panoramic views. The landscape transitions into alpine terrain as you cross ridges and valleys. Karanga Camp offers excellent views for sunset photography and rest.

Hiking: 4–5 hours

Accommodation: Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,680 m)

The air grows thinner as you ascend through barren, rocky slopes toward Barafu Camp. This camp is perched on a narrow ridge and can be windy. Rest early to recover strength before the summit attempt.

Hiking: 3–4 hours

Accommodation: Barafu Camp.

Day 6: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Start your summit attempt at midnight. The climb is demanding but incredibly rewarding. Reach Stella Point at dawn, then continue to Uhuru Peak, taking in breathtaking views over Africa.

Descend to Barafu for a short break, then continue to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Hiking: 10–14 hours

Accommodation: Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Hotel

Descend through the rainforest with a chance of spotting monkeys and colorful birds. At the gate, celebrate with your summit certificate and return to your lodge.

Hiking: 3–4 hours
